Cybersecurity has been an issue for years. As technology continues to grow, so does the threat of cyberattacks.
What can you and I do to protect ourselves? Are we being proactive enough to prevent ourselves from becoming the next cyberattack victims? Probably not. How many of us still use the same password for all of our personal and work accounts? Or accept a friend or follower request from someone we don’t know? Knowing what to do to protect ourselves, and doing it are two very different things. What has to happen for us to be proactive?
Earlier this week, President Obama implemented the Cybersecurity National Action Plan (CNAP), which includes several different components to increase our nation’s cybersecurity. Part of this plan is empowering you and I to be proactive when it comes to our own online accounts. We cannot expect a national action plan to keep our information safe on its own. You and I need to be held accountable for our own data, meaning setting up secure passwords with different authentication standards, changing our passwords every 30-60 days, and not using the same passwords for multiple accounts. We also need to be sure we are using security software and keeping it up-to-date.
The CNAP also includes modernizing government information technology, implementing a Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity, and increasing the Federal resources for cybersecurity by 35 percent. To learn more about the implementation of the CNAP, and to obtain more details, click here.
