Earlier this month, the Honolulu Fire Department was attacked with ransomware. The attack infiltrated the system when two or three city employees used city computers to check their personal email. Once the ransomware was detected, the administrative computers were taken offline. This was an attempt to mitigate the risk of additional data being compromised.
Luckily, the city backs up their data daily. Therefore, they were able to restore their systems without having to pay the ransom.
