BlackBerry Spends $1.4B to Acquire Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence Firm, Cylance
The ex-smartphone mogul, BlackBerry has made some significant changes of focus over the last five years. Going from a smartphone giant and hardware developer, to making the sharp turn into cyber security.
According to CNBC, over the last few years BlackBerry has focused on enterprise security at both an endpoint and smartphone level. Their level of protection also goes into a wide range of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, including connected cars.
It’s not surprising they’re moving into the booming space, but they’re doing so by taking some major steps.
In order to further position themselves in the cyber security space, BlackBerry acquired the security and artificial intelligence firm, Cylance for $1.4 billion. This is by far, one of the largest acquisitions BlackBerry has conducted over the last five years.
Cylance will continue to operate as a separate business unit, at least until the acquisition is final, which is projected to be February of 2019.
