Hibernation, Great for bats but….

hibernating_bat

It’s the year 2000 and I’m sitting at my brand new computer desk, on my brand new swivel chair, and I’m starting to explore my very first computer. It’s an HP and it has cool jungle sounds coming from it. It’s going to be the best, fastest, most exciting computer in the world. It’s loaded with cool programs (or so I thought) and it’s magical.

Lithium-Ion, It’s light, It’s powerful, It’s….

…the element of choice.
A recent trip drove home the importance of battery life in laptops. Although my laptop was relatively new at less than a year old, it lasted just under 2 hours on battery power. I had all the energy saving features on and I had dimmed the screen, but it didn’t seem to help much. When I got home I did some checking to see what was coming in the way of battery technology. While I found some information on new technologies, most seemed far from being ready to use. In fact there were only hints that there would be anything new within the next five years.

PC PITSTOP FIGHTS SCAREWARE – AV2008(9)

scare

This happened just 2 days ago. On Saturday I installed a new copy of Windows XP. It was a brand new copy and I put it on a brand new hard drive for the purpose of software testing. I finished the install and applied the drivers. I was behind a router which acts as a firewall. I opened the IE browser and went to a favorite site. I read the forums and exactly 23 minutes after the install I was receiving AV2009 popups. It’s scare ware. It told me I was infected and needed to download their program to remove the threat. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t even have an email client installed, no Instant Messenger.

Check out Robs video of what happens when a laptop catches fire. It’s had almost a million and a half views.

Happy Anniversary XP SP3

cruise

It’s been a full 6 months since the release of Windows XP SP3. The unsuspecting public downloaded it faster than Tom Cruise jumps a couch, and it wasn’t long before 25% of us found we had grabbed a ticking time bomb. Endless reboots, blue screens, data loss and reinstalls were the wails coming from every help forum on the World Wide Web. In some cases John Q Public didn’t even know the grenade was coming. It was tossed in the middle of the night by Microsoft’s Automatic Update service. You don’t need to imagine the problems this created because you lived it.

The Candidates and Computing

vote

Everyday we’re bombarded with segments on the worlds sinking economy. Satellite and cable delivers spin on everything from Housing to the cost of corn. But what I don’t see is how the candidates view computing and the internet. It may not seem as important as other issues but since my livelihood depends on it, I worry. Will someone try to limit my access? Will congress tax it out of reach for the average citizen? Will the next president support censoring it into impotency?

What does the next nicely wrapped, political present, have in store for us? That’s what I’m worrying about, and if your job is linked to computing, you might be too.
