Calallen School’s Network Infected With Ransomware
On June 25, 2017, Calallen Independent School District found themselves in a heap of trouble. Officials began noticing something was wrong with their email systems, and quickly learned ransomware had infiltrated their networks.
The exact variant of ransomware that hit the school district is uncertain. However, officials did report the ransom demand was for $500. Reports do not confirm if the ransom demand was paid. However, KRIS TV stated IT personnel was able to isolate the infection and rebuild infected servers. It is uncertain if the rebuild process was done within the IT department, or if a decryption key was purchased to unlock the server. It took two days for the school’s email system to become functional again.
Calallen School looked deeper into the attack to determine if a potential breach occurred. The school disclosed,
“…data had not been compromised or left their networks during the incident.”
