Cyber Attack Leaves California Eye Clinic Data Encrypted
The Redwood Eye Center, located in Vallejo, California, recently notified approximately 16,000 patients their personal information may have been compromised due to a cyber attack. On September 19, 2018 the Redwood Eye Center’s third-party vendor, IT Lighthouse suffered a ransomware attack. This malicious infection impacted the vendor’s database which included Redwood Eye Center’s patient records. The information stored on the server included patient names, addresses, dates of birth, health insurance information, and medical treatment information.
Redwood Eye Center’s IT department and a digital forensic team is working to restore access to the encrypted files. At this time, there is no evidence the exposed data has been leaked or used maliciously. At this time, this cyber attack is only being identified as a ransomware attack — not a security breach.
