Hutchinson Community Foundation recovered from a ransomware attack, to find the criminals hacked their data too…
On September 19, 2016, Hutchinson Community Foundation, in Hutchinson, Kansas, found out they had been hacked. Not only had they been hacked, but they were hit a ransomware attack. Ransomware is the malware that will encrypt users files, locking them until the ransom demand is paid. According to KSN News, the foundation had back ups of all of their information; therefore, they were able to recover their files without having to pay the cyber criminals.
Unfortunately, as Hutchinson County Foundation dug deeper, they found along with ransomware, their data had been hacked as well. They are uncertain how much data was leaked to the hackers, but it could include the 5,500 donors, stake holders and vendor files. For now, the foundation is notifying everyone of security breach and offering free credit reporting services.
