Cyberattack Strikes Capital Health Systems in New Jersey

Capital Health Systems in New Jersey experienced a cyberattack in late November, causing a temporary disruption to its IT systems.

The attack, attributed to the LockBit ransomware group, resulted in a network outage, but patient care continued.

While all systems have been restored, an ongoing investigation aims to determine the extent of the data breach involving patient and employee data. The hacking group claims to have stolen over 10 million files, including medical confidentiality data, and threatens to publish them unless a ransom is paid by January 9, 2024.

PC Matic‘s Application Allowlisting is the most effective cybersecurity protection from malware, ransomware, and more.

Additionally, users enjoy the advantages of a VPN for online freedom, premium identity theft protection, bank and credit monitoring, dark web monitoring, and 100% USA-based phone support.

Despite the absence of encryption, the attack has potential implications for patient care. A lawsuit has already been filed against Capital Health, alleging injuries to affected individuals due to the attack and the delay in notifications.

The extent of the data breach and further developments will be revealed as the investigation progresses.

The ransomware uses advanced encryption to lock a victim’s files, primarily targeting documents, images, and videos. After encryption, LockBit exfiltrates any sensitive data and threatens extortion if the ransom is not paid.
