North Korea Expected to Expand Cyber Warfare
NBC News has reported North Korea is sending malware riddled emails targeting U.S. electric companies, hoping to execute a successful breach. The entire nation must be on high defense. Although the target has been electric companies, it is believed the cyber warfare could expand to all of the broad sectors of the U.S. economy. This may include power plants, utility companies, or financial institutions to name a few.
Currently, a successful malware attack has yet to execute; however, that is not for lack of trying. It is likely North Korea will continue to attempt to breach the systems until they are successful.
This wouldn’t be the first time North Korea openly attacked. Three years ago, they hacked Sony. Last year, there was the Bank of Bangladesh heist, tying up the country’s federal reserves. The heist, although not confirmed to have been originated by North Korea, did net Kim Jong-un $81 million. Coincidence — it’s unlikely. South Korea has also been experiencing cyber attacks that have targeted their military, power plants, as well as their aerospace facilities that appear to have come from North Korea.
For now, the U.S. will remain on high alert.
