Potter County Riddled with Ransomware
An unknown ransomware variant has infiltrated the IT systems of Potter County, Texas. The cyber attack has been impacting county networks for approximately the last two weeks. The details released to the public regarding this cyber attack have been minimal, and now we know why.
Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner sent an email to county employees last week confirming the IT issues the county was experiencing was a result of ransomware. Judge Tanner also said,
“I will reiterate that I do not want the information about ransomware being made public. I hope that you will take me serious on that issue.”
However, it is clear, not all employees took this request to heart, as the content of the email has been made public. According to the email sent by Tanner, there is a high probability the county would not retrieve its files if they paid the hackers. Therefore, they have no intention to pay the ransom demands.
The county’s IT department is working to restore what files they can.
