Springfield City Hall in Tennessee was recently hit with ransomware. Ransomware is the malicious software the encrypts files, making them inaccessible until a ransom demand is paid, or the device is completely wiped clean. The ransomware variant used for this attack is unknown. Officials reported the ransom demand made was $1,000 USD.
Instead of paying the ransom, the City restored their systems using their back up files. The restoration process took four days. During this time, city employees were using the traditional pad and paper method to keep business going.
