California College Suffers Cyber Attack
On April 11, 2018, the Long Beach City College suffered a malware infection which took several systems offline. Forty-eight hours later, multiple systems remain impacted. According to the California college’s website, those services include:
- LBCC.edu faculty and staff email
- LBCC Student Viking Student System
- Voicemail
- HR System
- Financial Services
- Online Schedule
The malware strain that infected the college systems remains unknown. The school has not disclosed if a ransom demand has been made; therefore, making it unclear if this was a ransomware attack.
Long Beach City College IT staff is continuing to work diligently to get services up and running as quickly as possible. As staff continues working to remediate services, they will also be investigating how the malicious software was able to execute on their systems.
If there is any good news to report, it is this — The IT staff has been able to determine, no personal information has been breached as a result of the cyber attack. Also, the college has been able to continue with classes as scheduled while the systems are remediated.
