A little over a year ago (June 2010), Microsoft staged a big event in California to introduce the “world premiere” of a new product that the company hoped would revolutionize the home entertainment industry. That product was the Kinect device (formerly known by its code name, Project Natal), an add-on for the Xbox 360 video game console. It’s been a big hit with gamers, and in fact attained the Guinness World Record for the “fastest selling consumer electronics device,” selling a total of 10 million units in its first 90 days on the market.

That’s all well and good, but not everyone is into games or owns a game console. The technology, however, has uses that go far beyond playing games. And last month, Microsoft Research released the beta version of a Software Development Kit (SDK) that programmers can use to write applications that use the Kinect motion sensing technology on Windows 7. This beta release is for non-commercial applications, but a commercial version is expected to follow.
